Broadcast engineering experience
Timothy Z. Sawyer began his broadcasting career as a radio-station engineer in Orlando, Florida, in 1969. In 1985, he joined the internationally recognized consulting engineering firm of A.D. Ring & Associates and later worked with its wholly owned subsidiary, duTreil, Lundin & Rackley.
Mr. Sawyer established T Z Sawyer Technical Consultants on January 1, 1990. Since then, he has provided independent engineering and regulatory support to broadcasters, station owners, communications attorneys, and other industry professionals throughout the United States.
His work has involved more than 2,500 AM, FM, television, LPTV, and translator facilities. Assignments have included allocation and interference studies, directional and nondirectional AM systems, FCC applications and technical exhibits, facility relocations and upgrades, translator studies, television coverage and interference analysis, and specialized FAA matters.
His professional experience also includes a longstanding consulting relationship with Mullaney Engineering, Inc., a broadcast consulting engineering firm established in 1948.
Education and professional preparation
Mr. Sawyer’s academic background includes a BSEE from Florida Technological University, now the University of Central Florida, additional coursework at the University of Florida, and later advanced studies in engineering management at Purdue University.
Aviation and FAA experience
Mr. Sawyer has been active in aviation since 1969 and holds pilot ratings covering both piston- and turbine-powered aircraft. His extensive flight experience provides practical familiarity with aircraft operations, aviation communications and navigation systems, and the FAA regulatory framework.
This background complements his consulting work involving antenna structures, FAA notices and studies, obstruction evaluation, and other broadcast-facility matters affecting navigable airspace. He has also volunteered as a medical-transport pilot.
